How much did you spend to rent this camera?
20 bucks, but I used my own money.
Sammy, a hundred dollars for a hobby?
It's not a hobby, dad.

The ensemble cast includes Michelle Williams as the mother, Mitzi, of teenager Sammy Fabelman, the protagonist, and Paul Dano as his father, Burt.
It is the epitome of Spielberg's obsession with movies since his tender age of 6.
Sammy in the movie is the only son of Mitzi and Burt, who move from New Jersey to Arizona then to Northern California in the 1950's and 60's.
That's where Sammy finds his unshakeable bonds with movies, as he begins shooting movies at home, at school and even with his Boy Scout comrades.

But Mitzi gradually grows upset and Burt finds himself unable to deal with it.
And that goes right back to Spielberg's childhood.

STEVEN SPIELBERG, Director of "The Fabelmans":
He (Spielberg's father) wanted me in school to major in English so if I didn't become a filmmaker, I would become a teacher.
Being a movie director is just something that...one in a million people get to be a movie director.
He was simply trying to protect me.
My mom always wanted more.
She was "the-more" mom. Enough wasn't enough.
She inspired me to be in a way ambitious and greedy about more and more and more.

But in a major twist, Spielberg's parents split up when he was 19.
While Spielberg can still recall the drama and trauma that engulfed him, Spielberg left that out of "The Fabelmans" and instead gave Sammy a fresh and happy beginning as a filmmaker.
He also buried a secret about his mother's extramarital affairs with his father's best friend.

And that was a secret we'd shared for most of our lives.
I was able to regret that I hadn't shared that with my dad.

Spielberg once became estranged from his father for fifteen years following the divorce.
A Hollywood kingpin in his own right, uncovering his real-life drama in the spotlight.
