Opal auction in Alaska

Updated: Apr 17, 2022

{O/C} After yesterday's fascinating story about a woman planning to auction off her collection of African-American artifacts in New York comes another story about a notable gemstone going under the hammer.

Alaska auctioneer Nick Cline received a call out of the blue last year, the caller of which told him he had one of the world's biggest opals, and would like to auction it off.

The sister to an even bigger opal called "Olympic Australis", named after the Summer Olympic Games in Australia in 1956, the giant opal was found in the 1950s in the opal field of the Australian tiny town, Coober Pedy.

Dubbed "Americus Australis", the gemstone was stashed away circa 1980, but it ended up making its way to Alaska.

Now, the opal is due to go on the block this Sunday, the 20th, with an opening bid set at 125,000 USD.
