President Lopez Obrador rang the bell, blaring "death to racism, long live Mexico!"
Throngs of Mexicans soaked up the dazzling fireworks display.
The event has never been scrapped since 1847, when U.S. troops captured Mexico city during the U.S.-Mexico War.
