A white supremacist who fatally gunned down 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket last year was sentenced to life in prison.
One by one, victims' families described their outrage and sorrow in the courtroom, calling 19-year-old Payton Gendron misguided.
Anger briefly boiled over when one victim's family member rushed at him from the audience.
The man was quickly restrained.
Gendron shed tears during some of the testimony and apologised in a brief statement.
His hatred was fuelled by online racist conspiracy theories.
He pleaded guilty back in November to crimes including murder and domestic terrorism motivated by hate.
The massacre erupted last year when Gendron opened fire at the Tops Friendly Market on Buffalo's predominantly Black East Side, killing 10 and wounding three others.
