It happened in a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennesse where a former student killed six people before she was shot and killed.

Wielding two assault style rifles and a pistol, she then killed three 9-year-old students and three adults aged 60 to 61.

The first 911 call was received at around 10:13 on Monday morning.

The rampage ended when police shot and killed Hale, a former student of the Christian school.

The incident lasted around 14 minutes.

Police insist Hale, who identified as transgender, carefully plotted the attack.

John Drake, Nashville Police Chief, said, "There were maps drawn of the school in detail of surveillance, entry points, etc. We know and believe that entry was gained through shooting through one of the doors. So we know there were two AR style weapons one a rifle. Another was AR style pistol and other was a handgun."

Amid the chaos, terror-struck parents waited on baited breath outside the school as students were escorted to safety.

Founded as a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church with students from preschool through sixth grade, The Covenant School is located in an affluent neighbourhood just south of downtown Nashville.

Today's massacre is the third school shooting in 2023 alone.

One survivor of last year's Highland Park shooting in Illonois insists gun violence needs to be tackled.

"How is this still happening? How are our children still dying and why are we failing them?" Questioned Ashbey Beasley, Highland Park Mass Shooting Survivor.

Vigils were held across Nashville in honour of those who died.

President Joe Biden consoled grief-stricken families before calling on Congress to pass an assault weapons ban immediately.

It's just, it's sick," the president lamented, "It's heartbreaking. Families' worst nightmare."

"And as you know, and we have to do more to stop gun violence. So I call on Congress again to pass my assault weapons ban."
