{O/C} Humanity's shared traditions are worth-celebrating, but what about this annual red crab migration on Christmas Island?
{RVO}
A whopping 65 million members of the island's indigenous species have scuttled from tropical rainforests to the sandy coast.
Heavy rainfall last month kicked off the spectacle throughout the island, with roads cordoned-off just to allow for safe passage.
And photographers were obviously enchanted.
But the dark side of the red crab's history goes back to the 1990s when yellow crazy ants killed millions of red crabs by spraying acid into the crabs' eyes and leg joints to immobilise them.
Thankfully, the red crab population has rebounded in recent years due to pest control.
