US Justice Department not appealing mask ruling unless requested by CDC

{O/C}

America's Justice Department has announced it will not appeal an earlier federal district judge's ruling that halted the nationwide federal mask mandate on public transportation.

This, barring a request from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Yet, in an interview with NBC News, a former CDC director said this may be a curse for those with an impaired immune system.

{Soundbite} LESTER HOLT, NBC News: We've seen a lot of happy faces on airplanes. Is this cause to celebrate?

{Soundbite} DR. TOM FRIEDEN, Former CDC Director: Well, not if you're immunosuppressed. If you're immunosuppressed, it just got more dangerous to fly in the U.S. And that's unfortunate because, like it or not, we really are all connected, and wearing masks is a low-cost way of keeping our economy growing.

But while the news was welcomed by many, the patchwork of locally created rules had Americans baffled, reflective of the nation's lingering and marked divisions over ways to battle it out.
