The U.S. Justice Department is seeking to overturn a judge's ruling earlier this week that halted the sweeping federal mask mandate to which people on public transportation were subject.
This, after the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention requested an appeal.

The CDC cited its continuing assessment that, at this time, the order remains necessary for safety's sake.
Yet, it's so far unclear whether the Biden administration would ask the appeals court to immediately reimpose the mask mandate on public transit.
The public has been baffled by locally created rules that vary from state to state.
The CDC still recommends the public don masks. And the White House press secretary had this to say.
{Soundbite} JEN PSAKI, White House Press Secretary: They are still recommending people wear masks on airplanes, on Air Force One, which, of course, is a federal, not a private plane. We all wore masks on the plane when we travelled to New Hampshire yesterday. But we are not...people are not legally bound to wear masks, so it is a point in time where it is up to the people...It is their choice in that regard. But what I would tell you is the CDC obviously, as you noted, called for this extension because they wanted to look at more data. So I think we can all expect they are going to continue to want it.
