Some 10,000 civilians dead in besieged Mariupol

{O/C} With India now treading a tightrope, U.S. President Joe Biden exhorted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to double down his country's purchase of Russian oil.

During their virtual meeting, Biden promised the U.S. could help India diversity its energy sources so as not to rely entirely on Russia after India accelerated its purchase of Russian oil.

This, in a move to isolate Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

As the war stretches into its sixth week, mounds of debris and corpses now line the streets of the besieged port city of Mariupol, with no end to the refugee crisis in sight.

This sorry sight following a residential area fire speaks volumes about Ukraine's predicament.

Sheer horror again buffeted Kharkiv as firefighters scrambled to contain the fires in that residential area thrashed by relentless Russian shelling.

In Mariupol, true circumstances inside the city remain in mystery owing to Russia's unrelenting aggression and untrammelled violence.

Latest figures show the death toll may have surpassed 10,000 and a staggering 120,000 remain on the receiving end, shorn of food and water.

Mayor Vadym Boychenko accused Russian forces of stymieing plans to open safe corridors, saying it's part of a plan to conceal the bestial massacre. He said Russia rode roughshod over innocent residents.

Boychenko also said a huge shopping centre now houses the tens of thousands of bodies that have either been burned methodically or waiting to be burned, with mobile crematories arriving in the form of trucks.

In his nightly video address, President Zelensky said a chemical attack was par for the course, calling on the West to deter Russia from resorting to chemical weapons.

At the same time, U.S. officials have spotted the thin end of the wedge. Russia is pivoting to the eastern Donbas region after exorbitant losses in Kiev.

Donbas has been rent by ceaseless fighting between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian forces since 2014, with Russia recognising the region's independence.

Warnings of more sanctions clearly whistled in the wind given a long and menacing Russian convoy is now headed towards eastern Ukraine.

More artillery is being deployed near Donetsk.

This, as a huge Sword of Damocles hangs over eastern Ukraine, with more innocent civilians expected to be slaughtered.

The interminable war has let the genie out of the bottle. The United Nations children's agency today revealed nearly two-thirds of Ukraine's children have been displaced ever since the inception of the invasion.

So far, 142 children have perished, with 229 wounded.
