31-year-old Evan Gershkovich was arrested in late March while reporting in Moscow.
A court in Moscow ruled last month to keep him behind bars until August 30th, but his lawyers had challenged the decision.
Looking tense inside a glass defendant's cage at the Moscow City Court, Gershkovich was seen chatting with his parents, who were present, while waiting for the verdict.
The court on Thursday ruled that Gershkovich must stay in prison on espionage charges until at least late August.
In a statement, the Wall Street Journal said Gershkovich had been wrongfully detained for more than 12 weeks.
What's more, authorities have yet to detail any evidence to support the espionage charges.
Outside the courtroom, the U.S. Ambassador to Russia insisted the United States would continue to fight for justice.

LYNNE M. TRACY, U.S. Ambassador to Russia:
Today in the courtroom, Evan continued to show remarkable strength and resiliency in these very difficult circumstances. Despite Russian officials public assertions about Evan’s activities, let me reiterate the U.S. government’s firm position, the charges against him are baseless.
