Renewed Russian missile strikes draw condemnation from UN Security Council

{O/C} With a barrage of missiles comes a barrage of backlash.

That as the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting to discuss the deadly missiles that struck Poland and Russia's renewed attacks.

{Take SOT}

Ukraine may have unleashed the two deadly missiles on Poland that killed two people, but it wasn't its fault, insists NATO's Secretary-General.

{Soundbite}

JENS STOLTENBERG, NATO Secretary-General:

The incident was likely caused by a Ukrainian air defence missile fired to defend Ukrainian territory.

This is not Ukraine's fault.

Russia bears ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine.

{VO}

And so it does.

Russia today moved its reign of terror back to eastern Ukraine as missiles were seen hurtling in the air and smashing critical energy and civilian infrastructure.

Explosions rang out in the southern port of Odesa on Thursday morning, as well as Dnipro and in Kyiv.

This, after Moscow's forces retreated from the southern city of Kherson last week.

Evidence of war atrocities was uncovered when 63 apparently-tortured bodies were found.

Much of Ukraine was draped in darkness earlier this week as authorities are bracing for power outages in winter.

But in a positive light, the Black Sea grain deal has been extended by 120 days to allow for food exports and fertilisers from Ukraine's Black Sea ports.

The widely-embraced deal has eased global food shortages ever since Russia seized the Black Sea port.

While the probe continues into the two missiles that landed in Polish territory, U.N. ambassadors today bashed Russia for its relentless aggression one by one.

{Soundbite}

DAME BARBARA WOODWARD, UK Ambassador to the United Nations:

While we await the outcome of the investigation, we should be clear that this is a tragedy that indisputably stems from Russia's illegal and unjustified invasion and its inhumane assault on civilians across Ukraine.

{VO}

But Russia's UN representative dished it right back, accusing the West of supplying weapons to Ukraine to feed tensions.

Still, France's UN ambassador said it was ironic that Russia was shattering peace with missile strikes while G20 leaders were meeting to salvage peace.

America's ambassador to the United States followed that up by accusing Russia of tyrannising civilians.

{Soundbite}

LINDA THOMAS-GREENFIELD, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations:

This tragedy would never have happened but for Russia's needless invasion of Ukraine and its recent missile assaults against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.

This is a deliberate tactic by Putin. He seems to have decided that if he can't seize Ukraine by force, he will try to freeze the country into submission.

It is hard to overstate how horrific these attacks are.
