Russia breaks promise, escalating attacks on Ukraine

{O/C} We begin tonight in Ukraine, whose President called for further assistance from Western countries to help Ukraine fend off the Russians.

In Moscow's latest mendacious propaganda, the Kremlin reneged on its promise to scale back some of their operations as Russian forces took their offensive one step further.

{SOT}

The Kremlin clearly spoke with a forked tongue as it intensified attacks on Kiev and the northern city of Chernihiv, casting Ukraine on its pyre.

It's fanciful to believe the excruciating war is coming to an end as Russian forces pounded Mykolaiv's regional government building with bombs.

Ukraine is getting its own house in order as the search for survivors and victims continued today. At least 15 have perished and 40 were injured in the strike.

Mykolaiv's regional governor insists such an attack is merely the tip of the iceberg.

But when push comes to shove, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the case directly to U.S. President Joe Biden. He expressed his gratitude for an additional 500 million USD in aid.

He also portrayed this critical juncture as a major turning point.

He has also recalled Ukraine's ambassadors to Georgia and Morocco to further convince them to support Ukraine and punish Russia for the bestial war.

This, amid Russian shelling still thrashing homes and buildings across Kiev and Chernihiv, residents of which have been on the receiving end of the crisis.

Russian troops are also escalating their attacks on the separatist-held Donbas region and along a strategic route to there.

But in a morale-boosting development, Ukrainian refugees who're arriving in America will be given a warm welcome in existing communities like Sacramento and Seattle.

This follows President Biden's promise that the U.S. will give 100,000 Ukrainians refuge in America.

Ukrainian communities there feel they are obliged to pitch in and help.

{Soundbite} EDWARD KISLYANKA, Senior Pastor, House of Bread Church: The reason people come to places like Sacramento is because there's a high population of people that know them. Because it's relational, there's this feeling of, hey, we got to help. We got to do something.

More than 3 million Ukrainians have deserted this sinking ship of Ukraine, with many flocking to neighbouring Poland.

Ukrainians arriving in the United States will likely settle in cities which boast strong Ukrainian communities.

A timeline for refugee settlement is yet to be available despite the foreseeable influx of Ukrainian refugees akin to the Afghan refugee crisis last year.

Meantime, on the diplomatic front, with faint outlines of a possible peace agreement emerging, further negotiations are due to resume tomorrow via video conference.
