{O/C} Internationally acclaimed journalist and filmmaker Brent Renaud was killed in Ukraine after Russian forces opened fire on his vehicle there.
{SOT}
While travelling with his brother, Craig, for a documentary about refugees, the 50-year-old filmmaker perished at a checkpoint in Irpin just outside the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
The area has sustained ceaseless shelling by Russian forces lately.
This journalist was travelling with Renaud at the time of the attack and was wounded. He recalled the blood-curdling moment when Renaud was killed.
{Soundbite} JUAN ARRENDONDO, American Journalist: We crossed the first bridge in Irpin, we were going to film other refugees leaving, and we got into a car, somebody offered to take us to the other bridge, we crossed the checkpoint, and they started shooting at us.
The Kiev regional police confirmed Russian troops opened fire on his car.
He is believed to be the first journalist to have perished in the war.
Knowing journalists are literally putting their lives on the line, the Irpin mayor has barred journalists from entering the city to prevent a similar tragedy.
In the United States, the State Department condemned the attack, portraying Renaud's tragic demise as yet another gruesome example of the Kremlin's bestial actions.
Organisations protecting journalists are outraged and called for a halt to violence against journalists, noncombatants and civilians.
Alongside his brother Craig, Renaud won a Peabody Award for an HBO series entitled "Last Chance High".
Those who worked with Renaud lauded him for his awe-inspiring flair and courage.
Renaud had worked for HBO, NBC, Discovery, PBS, the New York Times and VICE News, which is why he is commended for his indomitable spirit that propelled him to success, in addition to compelling him to visit every nook and cranny of the world to witness wars and ghastly scenes of devastation.
