Missiles hit Lviv airport; Survivors being looked for in the theatre

{O/C} Russian forces intensified their fight in Ukraine by relentlessly raining down missiles on a western Ukrainian city airport.

This comes as rescue workers combed through a theatre blown apart by a Russian airstrike in their quest for survivors.

More than one day after the bloody airstrike and rescuers are still sifting through every inch of the remnants of the theatre where survivors may still be marooned.

There were conflicting reports on whether anyone had emerged from the rubble since the airstrike.

Hundreds had hunkered down in the grand theatre in central Mariupol after their homes were completely obliterated.

A heart-wrenching scene here as satellite images revealed the word "CHILDREN" was spelled out in front of the theatre in an attempt to avert an airstrike.

The assault on the theatre came as menacing Russian troops are taking on Ukrainians battling for their country's sovereignty.

Several strategic cities were bombarded one by one over the past few days in the apparently untrammelled fight till the bitter end.

In the northern city of Chernihiv, the domicile of 280,000 Ukrainians, at least 53 corpses had been carried to morgues in the last 24 hours amid heavy shelling.

At least 21 perished after Russian artillery completely pulverised a school and a community centre near Kharkiv, which has been especially hard hit.

Taking the fight to the finish one step further, Russian forces pressed on by bombarding an aircraft facility in Lviv, also destroying a bus repair facility, both of which had suspended activity.

Yet, two of the six Russian missile attacks on those facilities were thwarted.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited patients at a hospital in Kiev. He presented flowers to a 16-year-old girl for her courage in shielding her younger brother.

World shares were mixed amid uncertainties over the forthcoming Biden-Xi meeting.

And here in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index shed slightly to wrap up the week at 21,412.
