Moderna claimed Pfizer and BioNTech's Comirnaty jab infringes on Moderna's patents on its preventative shot, Spikewax.
Moderna filed patent infringement lawsuits in both a German court and a U.S. federal court.
Pfizer expressed "surprise" over the lawsuits, saying their vaccine is based on proprietary technology jointed developed by BioNTech and Pfizer.
Moderna and Pfizer's two-shot vaccines both use mRNA.
Both Pfizer and BioNTech have vowed to fiercely defend themselves against the allegation.
