Florida passes 6-week abortion ban

Writer: Daily news stories by LucasDaily news stories by Lucas

In a devastating blow to abortion rights advocates, Florida's Republican-dominated legislature has approved a six-week ban on abortions.

Anger erupted on the House floor as lawmakers voted 70-40 in favour of the ban.

The legislation was signed by GOP Governor Ron DeSantis.

The ban gives him a key political victory among Republican primary voters ahead of an expected presidential run built on his conservative reputation.

The six-week ban will take effect only if the state's current 15-week ban that is now being legally challenged is upheld.

The policy would have far-reaching implications for abortion access throughout the south.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Merrick Garland is taking the abortion pill battle to the Supreme Court.

This after a Federal Appeals court blocked a ruling from a Texas court that invalidated the approval of Mifepristone.

That means the drug can remain on the market for now.

But if the Supreme Court doesn't step in, women will soon be required to visit a doctor in person to obtain that pill.
