(Archived Jan 29, 2018) Trump to deliver first State of the Union

{O/C} U.S. President Donald Trump will make history on Tuesday when he delivers his first State of the Union address.

The theme of his speech will centre on building a safe, strong and proud America.

{Take SOT}

Key points of Trump's address will highlight progress in jobs and the economy, his tax cut victory and bringing lucrative trade deals to America.

{Soundbite}

DONALD TRUMP, United States President, January 19, 2018:

Our country is doing really well, our economy is perhaps the best it's ever been.

{Soundbite}

{Trump}

America is open for business and we are competitive once again.

{VO}

Much like during his joint address to Congress last year, Trump's speech is designed to help unite a still deeply divided nation.

It may be a tough sell, but the president hopes to inspire Democrats to help him rebuild the country by passing an infrastructure package valued at 1.7 trillion U.S. dollars.

{Soundbite}

BARBARA PERRY, Director of Presidential Studies, University of Virginia:

That's the kind of thing that could still get some bipartisan support.

{Soundbite}

CHUCK SCHUMER, Senate Minority Leader:

Negotiating with this White House is like negotiating with jello.

It's next to impossible.

{Soundbite}

{Perry}

What can be bad for bringing in a shovel-ready project into your district or our state as you're going into a re-election?

{VO}

Critics insist Trump will boast about all his accomplishments, but conveniently leave out his failures.

{Soundbite}

NORM ORNSTEIN, American Enterprise Institute:

He will exaggerate the accomplishments, take credit for anything that's happened and not talk much about the things that have not been done.

{VO}

He'll also call for the kind of immigration reform that offers illegal immigrants already living in America a path to citizenship.

At the same time, he'll insist on funding for a border wall to prevent immigrants from streaming in from Mexico.

{Soundbite}

Voice of DONALD TRUMP, U.S. President:

We're going to treat people very well, and we're going to solve a problem that has been a very tough problem to solve.

{VO}

When it comes to national security, Trump will make the case for a stronger military, a tougher approach to North Korea and efforts to secure peace in the Middle East.

{Soundbite}

{Ornstein}

I've got to believe we will have at least one Rocket Man, if not two mentions.

I would expect that Trump is going to tout his Middle East policy which is getting some acclaim.

{VO}

His first State of the Union address comes as Trump is battling poor ratings and trying to move past a Russia meddling probe that still haunts his administration.
