At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, passengers witnessed hundreds of flight cancellations.

Parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas are also battening down the hatches.

More than half an inch of ice could accumulate in parts of the Ozark mountains, while a quarter- to a half-inch was expected in Northern Texas.

Across the U.S. heartland, more than 2,000 flights slated for later today had been cancelled by Wednesday night. More than half of them were at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport, where frigid temperatures are expected.

Winter took a fleeting break in the Northeast on Wednesday. Yet, temperatures are expected to plunge again within hours.
