The suspect is reported to be a 42-year-old man who opened fire at co-workers before fleeing in a vehicle following the shooting on Thursday afternoon.

The shooting took place at Columbia Machine Inc. in Smithsburg. The fourth victim -- a state trooper -- was not slain albeit critically injured, but is said to be doing well at a hospital.

Authorities arrived at the scene to chase down the suspect and discovered a semi-automatic pistol.

The motive behind this fatal shooting remains under investigation.

Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen lamented the significant loss of life across America amid an ever-mounting spate of mass shootings in America.
