US surpassed the sombre 800,000-case milestone

America's fight against COVID-19 appears to be coming apart at the seams.

This, as the country was intimidated by another dispiriting setback, surpassing the 800,000-case milestone.

And Britain recorded its first death of a patient infected with Omicron, sending the British getting booster shots to protect themselves against the deadly variant.

America's halcyon days - end of racial segregation back in 1964 as the Civil Rights Act superseded all local laws; the abolition of slavery; as well as some unforgettable moments as American astronauts made that historic remark, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", are now taking a back seat, with more than 800,000 Americans having suffered at the hands of COVID.

America, one of the biggest nations in the world, is now bogged down with the virus in more ways than one.

According to the most recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention, the seven-day death average in the U.S. was 1,092, a 27.8 percent increase from the previous week.

In light of the unprecedented upsurge in COVID cases since the onset of the pandemic, a mask mandate for stores and other indoor spaces took effect in New York.

On the very day when the U.S. started administering COVID vaccines to the public, an eager nation began rolling up its sleeves.

Nevertheless, passing up and eschewing vaccines is not a rare sight, which stands to reason why even with vaccines available, the entire nation has still failed to combat COVID.

Hospital workers in Minnesota, one of the U.S. states suffering the brunt of this predicament, are swamped with so much work every day, they can hardly reflect on the upsurge.

Suffice it to say, the presence of vaccines appears to be of no avail for America, as disinformation campaigns on the Internet, coupled with a bit of vaccine hesitancy, has made America's road to recovery fraught with peril.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, Britain witnessed the first ever death of a patient who had fallen victim to the Omicron variant.

As such, in a televised address, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said everyone aged 18 or above can avail themselves of the vaccination programme to get a booster shot, lest more infections come in thick and fast.

U.K. health authorities are currently doubling down on efforts to fight the Omicron mutant strain as it threatens to become dominant and inundate Britain's healthcare system.
