Turning to this developing Olympics story. The United States today won its first medals in the men's 400-meter individual medley race in this year's Tokyo Olympics.
27-year-old Chase Kalisz was nearly a full body length ahead of his closest competitor at the end of the race, with a time of 4:09.42. Without a doubt, he won the competition, and ended up getting a gold medal. Born in Maryland, Kalisz is the second-oldest swimmer to ever win the Olympic event.
This Olympic Games is the first time since 1972 where the nation didn't win a medal on the first day of the competition.
Considered a swimming legend, Michael Phelps today set another world record, with his winning time at 4:03.84, more than 5 and a half seconds faster than the record he had been holding for 13 years. He also got a gold medal.
U.S. swimmer Keran Smith came in third in the men's 400-meter freestyle race. But much to Americans' chagrin, Tunisia's Ahmed Hafnaoui won the race. Sure enough, the result was utterly unexpected, rendering Americans there speechless.
But a feeling of hopelessness didn't set in, as the country earned two more medals in the women's 400-meter individual medley race. Having made every minute count, Emma Weyant won silver, and Hali Flickinger took bronze. The winner - Japanese swimmer Yui Ohashi.
To date, the U.S. has got 8 medals - 2 golds, 2 silvers and 4 bronzes.
