New York battened down the hatches, with streets in the city which never sleeps completely empty in the dead of night, as New Yorkers began sandbagging their homes, bracing for flooding, torrential rain, power outages and toppled trees.
So menacing and ominous is hurricane Henri that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who will spend his last day in office on Monday, wanted every New Yorker warned.
Andrew Cuomo, New York Governor: If you have to move, if you have to stock up, if you have to get to high ground, it has to be today. New Yorkers, please take this storm seriously.
Knowing the extent to which the hurricane will devastate the region, New Yorkers are authorities are eager to escape hurricane Henri's wrath.
People living on the East Coast did heed Cuomo's advice as they descended upon grocery stores and gas stations yesterday, stocking up on groceries and gassing up their vehicles.
Some gas stations in Long Island sold out of fuel as hundreds of thousands rushed to gas up.
Also bracing for the storm are New York authorities, who are prepared to close the Statue of Liberty on short notice.
Long Island is expected to suffer the brunt of the storm, as is southern New England.
With the eye of the storm expected to wreak havoc in much of the East Coast midday tomorrow, hurricane warnings extended from coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island to near New Bedford, Massachusetts, and across the opulent oceanfront estates of New York's Hamptons to the focal point in summer - Fire Island.
The first thunderstorms of that hurricane already took the gloss of the weekend, as flash flooding began in some areas overnight.
Meanwhile, drivers were seen plowing through foot-deep water in several parts of New York City and contiguous states due to rainstorms.
With severe weather alert now in place on the East Coast, the hurricane, which is threatening millions living along the East coast, thwarted a superstar-laden concert in Central Park in New York City on Saturday. Concertgoers were asked to leave the part as thunderstorms were inching closer.
New York hasn't had a direct hit from a powerful cyclone since superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc in 2012.
Henri sped up overnight, currently moving north at about 21 miles per hour.
Earlier this evening, Henri weakened slightly to a tropical storm prior to making landfall.
Regardless of where it will make landfall exactly, chances are, the storm will rip through a large swath of the Northeast, from New Jersey to Cape Cod in Massachusetts, which has been endowed with tourists for leisure.
