U.S. President Joe Biden said yesterday that the U.S. and South Korea remain “deeply concerned” about the situation in North Korea, and announced he will deploy a new special envoy to the region to help refocus efforts to pressure Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear and missile weapons program.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Moon Jae-in welcomed “America’s return” to the world stage and said the leaders of both countries are committed to working closely towards denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
During a joint news conference, Biden said he would deploy a special envoy, Sung Kim, who previously served as ambassador to South Korea, to serve as the special envoy to the region. Moon said the move by the U.S. “reflects the firm commitment of the U.S. for exploring diplomacy and its readiness for dialogue with North Korea.”
