UN Ocean Conference draws to a close

{O/C} A United Nations conference delivered a stern warning to the world about the aggravating conditions of the world's oceans with an impassioned plea for bold moves.

More than 6,000 heads of state, scientists and climate activists descended upon Lisbon, Portugal earlier this week to join the five-day UN Ocean Conference.


In the end, chickens will come home to roost. That's the powerful message against inaction from the declaration published on the last day of the summit.


Leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, alerted the world to the global emergency threatening to devour the oceans.


The chill wind of global warming, pollution and acidification is menacing our oceans.

A notable step forward is a fresh international agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, or the Treaty of the High Seas, that sets its sights on an all-encompassing legal framework for the high seas.

But protesters outside entreated the leaders to step up to the plate.

What I see and what I hear is a lot of talk and very little action.

The biggest threat right now is over-fishing because so many sharks land in bycatch nets and it's not just accidental bycatch nets, sometimes it's even targeted bycatch, and they just do not have protection at all.

With our oceans languishing in such abysmal conditions, world leaders are going to bat for them via salvaging 30 percent of the world's seas by 2030.
