Closed-circuit camera captured the moment the bomb went off on Istiklal Avenue near the iconic Taksim Sqaure, sending people fleeing in panic amid the horror.
In all, 6 people were killed, with 81 others hospitalised.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the senseless blast a terrorist attack.
Later, police detained a Syrian woman with suspected links to Kurdish militants, who confessed to planting the bomb.
She would have fled to neighbouring Greece had she not been nabbed in the nick of time.
Police say at least 46 others have also been detained for interrogation.
Officials are blaming the United States which supports Syrian Kurdish groups.
Still, the White House said it strongly condemned the "act of violence" in Istanbul, pleading solidarity with Turkey in countering-terrorism.
Sunday's blast serves as a horrible reminder of the anxiety that's long lurked given a litany of deadly bombings between 2015 and 2017.
Some were perpetrated by Islamic State militants.
