Ambulances were on high alert at Honolulu's main international airport.
The packed flight was carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew members on board.
Passengers say the turbulence sent unrestrained passengers and projectiles flying all over the plane.
Mainly suffering bumps and bruises, twenty people were taken to hospitals with 11 listed in serious condition.
Reports say some of those injured weren't buckled up even with the seat belt signs on.
The airline's chief operating officer called it an unusual event.
An investigation is now underway.
