The storm has caused no damage so far, but the Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents to be alert to mudslides.
Up to 10 centimeters of rain was forecasted across the northern region.
In Sendai, the storm led to train service delays.
Nepartak is the season's eighth typhoon for Japan.
The storm caused only limited disruption to the Olympic Games, with some events such as surfing and rowing rescheduled.
