Train derailment in Iran kills at least 17

{O/C} A train derailment in eastern Iran early Wednesday has killed at least 17, with 50 and counting wounded, some critically.

The train partially veered off the track before Wednesday's first light near the desert city of Tabas, some 550 kilometres southeast of the capital of Tehran.

Authorities believe the death toll could rise.

Rescuers in ambulances and helicopters arrived at the scene where communication is patchy to tend to the injured. Over a dozen suffered critical injures, with some sent to local hospitals.

The crash is still under investigation, though there are reports the train collided with an excavator.

This compounds the country's double whammy of bruising U.S. sanctions over its bungled nuclear deal as well as the deaths of at least 41 in a building collapse in the country's southwest.
