Tough battle for presidency in France

{O/C} A bruising battle in France tonight for the country's top job.

The duel officially commenced today, with both French President Emmanuel Macron and his far-right nemesis Marine Le Pen both emerging as the winner in Sunday's first-round of voting. He got more than 27 percent of the votes and Le Pen, 23 percent.

To gain more support, Macron is headed to an economically-depressed region of northern France where the bulk of the voters voted for Le Pen.

Having faced Le Pen in the presidential run-off just five years ago and knowing the crystal ball remains clouded, Macron cautioned against being too optimistic, saying he just aims to convince those who either didn't vote or those who voted for the "extremes" that there're more upsides to voting for him.

Macron has accused Le Pen of her dangerous manifesto of racist and ruinous policies.

Le Pen is hoping to leverage anger at Macron over policies interpreted as favouring the well-off.
