In Arabi, there was a pungent smell of natural gas in the air as residents and rescue personnel surveyed the damage. Some houses were destroyed, with roofs completely toppled over.

About 13,000 homes and businesses lost power in the wake of the storm.

The weather system also dumped torrential rain on Alabama on Tuesday evening.
