August 22nd, 2005:

The last Jewish settlers left the Gaza Strip. That happened nearly 40 years after Israel captured the territory during the 6-day war.

The Israeli withdrawal made way for Palestinian control in Gaza.


1996:

In Washington, President Bill Clinton signed welfare reform into law.

Clinton: Today we are ending welfare as we know it. But I hope this day will be remembered, not for what it ended, but for what it began.

The measure ended guaranteed cash payments to America's poor, and demanded work from its recipients.


1989:

Huey Newton, co-founder of the 60s militant group, the Black Panthers, was shot to death by a drug dealer in Oakland, California.

Newton, who struggled with drug addiction, was 47.


1920:

Ray Bradbury, the sci-fi author whose works included "Fahrenheit 451", was born in Waukegan, Illinois.


1963:

Singer-songwriter Tori Amos was born in Newton, North Carolina.
