July 12th, 100 B.C.:

Julius Caesar, the ancient Roman dictator and military conqueror, who was assassinated on the ides of March, was born.


1984:

Walter Mondale picked the first woman to run on a major party ticket for the White House. The Democratic Presidential Nominee chose New York Congresswoman, Geraldine Ferraro, as his running mate.

"Thank you Vice President Mondale. Vice President - it has such a nice ring to it!" Said Ferraro.

Mondale and Ferraro lost to Republican incumbents, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush that fall.


1990:

In Moscow, Boris Yeltsin quit the Communist party ahead of the Soviet Union's collapse the following year. Yeltsin served as the Russian President until the end of the decade.


1895:

Oscar Hammerstein, the Broadway lyricist known for his musicals with composer Richard Rodgers, was born in New York city.


1937:

"So I'm telling you, you are going to try as hard as you can, and you're gonna do it because I said so."

Comedian and actor Bill Cosby, whose work lifted the portrayal of African Americans on television, was born in Philadelphia.
