1984:
Walter Mondale picked the first woman to run on a major party ticket for the White House. The Democratic Presidential Nominee chose New York Congresswoman, Geraldine Ferraro, as his running mate.
"Thank you Vice President Mondale. Vice President - it has such a nice ring to it!" Said Ferraro.
Mondale and Ferraro lost to Republican incumbents, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush that fall.
1990:
In Moscow, Boris Yeltsin quit the Communist party ahead of the Soviet Union's collapse the following year. Yeltsin served as the Russian President until the end of the decade.
