June 2nd, 1997:

In Denver, a Federal jury convicts Timothy McVeigh of murder and conspiracy in the Oklahoma City bombing. The mother of one of the 168 victims: “The emotions have been building up for such a long time that, just to hear that word – guilty.” McVeigh is executed four years later.


June 2nd, 1953:

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II is crowned in London’s Westminster Abbey. The coronation takes place more than a year after the death of her father, King George VI.


June 2nd, 1979:

Pope John Paul II arrives at his native Poland, on his first ever Papal visit to the Communist country.


June 2nd, 1941:

In New York, baseball’s “Iron Horse”, Lou Gehrig of the Yankees, dies of a degenerative disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was 37.
