1429: English siege of Orleans broken by Joan of Arc and the French army.
1915: RMS Lusitania sunk by German submarine off the southern coast of Ireland, leaving more than a thousand people dead. It was en route to New York City when it was sunk by a German submarine. The United States was furious, denouncing Germany, because some 1,000 people were killed, many of whom were Americans. On April 6, 1917, the U.S. Congress followed Wilson’s request to declare war on Germany.
1939: Germany and Italy announced an alliance known as the Rome-Berlin Axis in the Second World War. The Rome-Berlin Axis is also known as the Axis Powers, which was formed by Japan, Italy and Germany.
2017: Emmanuel Macron won France’s presidential election, defeating Marine Le Pen. He quickly rose to fame after winning the election despite being behind in opinion polls initially. He became the youngest president in French history, as he was elected President at the age of 39.
