December 4th, 1991:


Freedom at last for Terry Anderson, the Associated Press correspondent held hostage in Lebanon. Anderson was released after at least 7 years in captivity, held longer in Lebanon than any other Western hostage.


December 4th, 1992:


Then-U.S. President George H. W. Bush ordered American troops to Somalia to help feed famine victims.

The mercy mission later turned bloody as the troops tried to disarm factions hindering relief efforts.

President Bill Clinton ultimately withdrew all U.S. troops from the African country.


December 4th, 1783:


With the Revolutionary War over, General George Washington said farewell to his officers in New York.

More than 5 years after that parting at Fraunces Tavern, Washington was sworn in as America's first President.


December 4th, 1993:


Rock musician and composer Frank Zappa died in Los Angeles. He was 52.
