The FDA in the U.S. said transplant recipients, as well as the immunocompromised, can get an extra dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine to boost immunity, as the Delta variant continues to play out.

The announcement came late Thursday from the Food and Drug Administration. It applies to several million Americans especially vulnerable because of organ transplants, certain cancers, or other disorders.
Several other countries, including France and Israel, have also recommended a third dose for the immunocompromised.
As it is hard-pressed to rev up the immune system of the immunocompromised because of certain medications and diseases, a third COVID dose is now believed to hold the key to boosting immunity in them.
The FDA's decision only applies to an estimated 3 percent of the adult population, so it is not for the general population.
The CDC is expected to formally recommend the extra shots for certain immune-compromised groups after a meeting tomorrow.
The FDA's decision came amid an ongoing surge in COVID infections and hospitalisations in the U.S., thanks to the highly transmissible Delta variant.
