The U.S. government has not approved booster shots against the virus yet, saying its necessity has yet to be proven.
The fully vaccinated seem well protected for now, according to health authorities.
But, healthcare providers in the country have reported that more than 900 instances of people have gotten a third COVID dose, according to a database run by the CDC.
Despite a lack of FDA approval, public health officials in San Francisco said on Tuesday they will still provide an extra dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for people who got the single-shot J&J vaccine.
Several studies are expected to find out whether boosters shots are indeed needed for the immunocompromised, as well as healthcare workers.
Israel is among some countries which are already giving out third doses.
