SCOTUS allows Biden to end Trump-era asylum policy

{O/C} Meanwhile, in a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court has allowed the Biden administration to ditch a Trump-era immigration order that's had asylum-seekers stay in Mexico for hearings in US immigration courts.

Two conservative judges -- Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh -- joined those siding with the White House.

But it's manifest the ruling will have little impact for now because President Joe Biden has softened Washington's stance towards immigrants seeking refuge at the southern border.

Under the Trump administration, the "Remain in Mexico" programme enrolled some 70,000 people after its launch back in 2019.

Biden had called for an end to the restriction, but Republican-led Texas and Missouri filed a lawsuit that had the policy reinstated.
