Carrying 145 passengers flight 144 landed safely at Sydney airport after a 3.5-hour flight.
Emergency crew were put on standby at the airport as a precaution.
The Boeing 737-838 reportedly experienced an issue with one of its two engines about an hour away from Sydney.
Passengers say there was a slight shudder and turbulence.
Qantas said the engine was subsequently shut down but did not specify the problem.
It added such inflight engine shutdowns are rare, but its aircraft are designed to fly for an extended period on just one engine.
