Putin sets a tough tone for upcoming summit with Biden

Russian President Vladimir Putin is not happy with U.S. President Joe Biden’s manifesto. Ahead of his upcoming summit with Biden, Putin accused Washington of trying to contain Russia’s development, and citing the administration’s response to the deadly January 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol is a prime example of the country’s double standards.

Tough talk from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking at an economic forum in St. Petersburg, Putin mentioned arms control, global conflicts, the coronavirus pandemic and climate change are among the issues he and Biden would discuss at their upcoming summit, which is due to take place on June 16 in Geneva.

At the economic forum, Putin criticised the U.S. for containing Russia’s development, saying Russia doesn’t have any issues with the U.S., and that it was the U.S. who imposed economic sanctions on Russia in an attempt to influence the country’s development, so as to prevent the U.S.’ status as the most powerful country in the world from being changed.

Putin reiterated that Russia adamantly rejects accusations of attempting to sway U.S. Presidential elections. He also spoke critically of the U.S.’ response to the January 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, which took place just as Congress was ready to certify Biden’s victory in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Putin said the violent mob of rioters weren’t just rioters because they had come with political demands.

Putin said the U.S. and its allies strongly criticising Belarus’ crackdown on anti-government protests and Russian authorities for a harsh response to anti-Kremlin demonstrations is a prime example of the West’s double standards.

At a video conference with the heads of major international news agencies, Putin mentioned he will attend the meeting with the hope of easing tensions with Washington, as Russia-U.S. ties have sunk to post-Cold War lows over Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, accusations of Russian interference in U.S. elections, and cyberattacks in the U.S. But be that as it may, he said he doesn’t expect any breakthroughs from the summit with Biden.
