Buckingham Palace also said on late Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II had concurred that the Duke of York should give up his honorary leadership of various charities, known as royal patronages.
His fall from grace will also have him relinquish the title "his royal highness" in official settings.
The decision is part of an effort to make Buckingham Palace, which has long been haunted by sordid headlines, impervious to the fallout from the sex scandal in which Prince Andrew is embroiled.
More than 150 veterans and serving members of the British military reportedly asked the queen to strip her second son of his military titles, saying he had failed to live up to the highest standards of probity and honourable conduct that are expected of British officers.
After yesterday's development, Buckingham Palace was quick to keep the repercussions of Prince Andrew's involvement in that scandal at arm's length.
