The chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other top health authorities outlined the plan to administer an extra COVID dose to people eight months after getting their second shot of the Pfizer of Moderna vaccine.

Booster shots will be given starting from September 20.

People who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine will also need extra shots, but health officials are still gleaning more data.

The announcement came the same day the Biden administration said it would require nursing homes to mandate inoculations for all staff members in order to continue receiving federal funds.

Earlier, U.S. health officials had already recommended a third shot for the immunocompromised as the Delta variant continues to play out in the country.

President Joe Biden: We'll be ready to start these booster - this booster programme during the week of September 20, in which time anyone fully vaccinated on or before January 20 will be eligible to get a booster shot.
