{O/C} Disaffected citizens and lawmakers notwithstanding, Peru's embattled president has survived a second impeachment attempt just eight months into his tenure.
{RVO}
This came after a stormy parliamentary debate that lasted more than 8 hours last night.
55 legislators voted in favour, 54 against and 19 abstained, falling short of the 87 votes entailed to impeach Pedro Castillo.
Castillo, who was a political novice when he first took the helm last year, has characterised the accusations against him as groundless speculation that can by no means be corroborated.
The President's critics have repeatedly claimed Castillo is subject to three preliminary probes into possible corruption, which, under Peruvian law, cannot proceed until he leaves office.
While Castillo has survived yet another attempt, the latest move against him will add to Peru's political turmoil and weaken the President's hold on power.
On the campaign trail, he promised to nationalise Peru's crucial mining industry and amend the constitution.
