One-year anniversary of the Capitol insurrection

{O/C}

We head to America, where anguished Americans commemorated the first anniversary of last year's deadly insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.

Against the sombre backdrop of an odious insurrection, scenes of which remain indelible, U.S. President Joe Biden commemorated the one-year anniversary of last year's stunning Capitol insurrection alongside his fellow Democrats.

In his most forceful speech ever, Biden chastised his predecessor, Donald Trump, albeit not mentioning him, for putting a dagger at the throat of America's democracy, and pledged to protect the country's democracy.

JOE BIDEN, United States President: I will defend this nation. I'll allow no one to place a dagger at the throat of our democracy.

There was scarcely any Republican who joined Biden and the Democrats.

Instead, the nation is still suffering at the hands of the insurrection's unsettled aftermath.

The U.S. President then got on the soapbox, giving Trump an earful as he remained adamant America will not give in to the insurrectionists and Trump's ardent supporters, who never demonstrate patriotic fervour. As such, he also called on Americans to keep their eyes peeled for those who wish to put America to a long time of peril once again.

"To state the obvious, one year ago today, in this sacred place democracy was attacked... Our democracy held. We the people endured. We the people prevailed. For the first time in our history, a president had not just lost an election, he tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power as a violent mob breached the Capitol."

Biden's voice boomed at times, reverberating in the sacred Statuary Hall where rioters had laid siege.

At the same time, he denounced his predecessor for being unhelpful by aiding and abetting the insurrectionists while watching it all unfold on the tube.

"We saw with our own eyes rioters menace these halls, threatening the life of the Speaker of the House. Literally erecting gallows to hang the vice president of the United States of America. What do we not see? We didn't see a former president, who had just rallied the mob to attack, sitting in the private dining room of the Oval Office in the White House, watching it all on television. And doing nothing."

The President and Republicans made contradictory remarks with respect to the insurrection. While Republicans continue to remain intransigent about the result of the 2020 Presidential election, Biden accused Trump of deliberately spreading a litany lies about that election.

Even at that, the all but vanquished Trump showed no signs of backing down, as evidenced by a conspicuous absence of most Republicans at the U.S. Capitol, where a heinous insurrection once took place, still remaining defiant.

What's more, former U.S. President Barack Obama added the emancipation of all those who don't have the right to vote is of momentous and uppermost importance.

A moment of silence was held in Congress today, with Democrats and only two Republicans, namely Congresswoman Liz Cheney and former Vice-President Dick Cheney, present.

At dusk, it was all about a prayer vigil outside the U.S. Capitol, marking the solemn anniversary of the painful event that tipped the balance for a sea change in America.
