The newspaper company didn't disclose specifics, like the exact amount of money it actually used to purchase the game, albeit listing the purchase price as being in the "low-seven figures".
Founded by Josh Wardle, a software engineer based in Brooklyn, back in October last year, the free online word game was recently catapulted into the limelight. Within only two months' time, the number of players had already grown to some 300,000 after people began sharing their scores on social media.
The New York Times also has its own popular word games such as Spelling Bee and its crossword puzzle. It said Wordle players will be free to play for new and existing players, and no changes will be made to the way the game is played.
