Number of COVID cases drops in Brazil

In South America, Brazil is backing away from the virus brink, as burial and hospital services are no longer in a state of collapse. But, experts warned of another outbreak if people start to ignore anti-virus measures.

The number of states of ICU capacity above 90 percent has reduced to 10, from 17 a months ago, according to data from a state-run medical research institute.

And gravediggers no longer need to work day and night as the number of COVID cases is dwindling, although some 2,400 people still died over the past week.

Brazil’s death toll of 401,186 the world’s second highest. But trying to avert another outbreak, some mayors and governors still tightened antivirus measures over the last month as an epidemiologist argued it’s too soon to roll back restrictions.

With slow vaccine rollout, millions of Brazilians have yet to receive a dose of the COVID vaccine, and it implies that they are still prone to infection. Scientists believe authorities need to step up efforts to administer more vaccines to achieve herd immunity.
