The awardees are Americans Carolyn R. Bertozzi and K. Barry Sharpless, as well as Danish scientist Morten Meldal who are credited with "click" chemistry and chemical reactions inside living organisms.

They can be used to produce cancer drugs, map DNA and create materials devoted to a specific purpose.

Notably, American Sharpless is the fifth person to nab this award twice, first in 2001 for his idea of connecting molecules utilising a chemical dubbed "buckles".

The awardees will share a cash award of approximately 900,000 U.S. dollars in all bequeathed by the prize's creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.
