The official election campaigning for the new leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party is officially underway.

This, as a new Japanese Prime Minister will be elected in the September 29 election.

Four candidates are in for a chance to become the next Japanese Prime minister, who will take over outgoing and current Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga.

Two women are among the four candidates, which is rare, since the only other female Prime Minister election candidate in Japan's history was in 2008, when Yuriko Koike, which is currently serving as Tokyo's governor, made a run.

Early this morning, the four each submitted their official candidacy at party headquarters, prior to a series of joint public debate sessions and other campaigning planned over the next two weeks.

Their policies mainly focus on the pandemic and its economic fallout, and the increasingly aggressive role China has played in regional affairs.

The current Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga, decided to leave his post after around one year in the post as support ratings for Suga and his government nosedived, mainly on account of his handling of the virus and insistence on hosting the Olympics in spite of the pandemic.

The party is hoping to win in general elections that must be held by later November this year with a new face.
