Braving freezing rain, demonstrators chanted slogans against pension reforms as they peacefully marched through the streets of Paris.
Police fired tear gas amid skirmishes to disperse hooded youths who hurled projectiles, with at least 38 people detained.
French unions are calling for a second day of strikes on January 31st to pressure Macron and his government to stand down.
The strikes are a major test for Macron as they disrupted transport and public services.
The overhaul would see most people work an extra two years to 64 years old as it raises the retirement age.
While polls show most French people oppose the reform, President Emmanuel Macron is pressing ahead.
He insists it's the only way to keep the pension system solvent.
