Lockdown extended in Sydney

In Sydney, the original two-week lockdown has now been extended for another week due to a sluggish vaccination rate, and the serious safety threat posed by the highly contagious Delta variant.

The decision to extend the lockdown through July 16 was made on health advice, according to the Australian government.

The extension of the lockdown means most children will not be able to return to school next week following their summer vacation.

Currently, only 9 percent of the country’s adults are fully vaccinated, which reveals that many Australians are still prone to the deadly virus.

Last week, almost half of Australia was in lockdown due to virus clusters in those cities.

Australia has been relatively successfully in containing COVID outbreaks throughout the pandemic, as fewer than 31,000 cases and 910 deaths have been reported since the onset of the pandemic.
